change in dissertation idea
I initially wanted to look at the effect of war on art, but I have come to realise that it is much to broad I have struggled to to try and condense it as I wasn't really sure what I wanted to find out. It would have also been difficult to create a practical project alongside it, so I have decided to go in a different direction, one which is more in line with illustration.
I have always been interested in poster art, I feel like it has such an impact on society in many different ways, and there is such variety in the design. I found this quote
"for over 200 years posters have been displayed in public places all over the world. Visually striking, they have been designed to attract the attention of passers-by, making us aware of a political viewpoint, enticing us to attend specific events or encouraging us to purchase a particular product or service" - Max Gallo
I'm not sure what area I would like to go into yet, but I am interested in the different influences poster art today has had. I am massively interested in the movement of Constructivism which had a big impact in the bold, graphic designs of posters, it influenced other big movements such as Bauhaus and De Stijl. That in itself would have a lot of scope for exploration into political and social issues because of the propaganda involved with the Russian revolution but also the influence it had over advertising. But I also want to look into some other influences such as:
Art Deco
Japanese art
French posters
African art
I haven't decided on a question yet but I've had some ideas, although they are still quite broad:
- exploring the importance of poster art to our society and the influences that has given them the aesthetic they have today
- how has poster art in western culture today been influenced by movements such as constructivism?
- what has been illustration's role within propaganda poster art?
I now need to re-do my proposal and continue with research.
